A dermal filler is a soft-tissue filler that adds volume to the cheeks, lower face, lips, or hands. This added volume effectively fills in both fine lines and deep creases. There are different types of dermal fillers, all of which have different main active ingredients. To determine the optimal dermal filler for your individual case, contact our office to schedule a consultation. In some cases, treatment can be performed on the same day.

Areas Treatable with Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers can diminish the appearance of wrinkles and restore skin’s volume in any of the following places:
- Sides of the nose. Lines commonly form from the sides of the nose to the corner of the mouth. These nasolabial folds are also known as laugh or smile lines.
- Below the mouth. Wrinkles which extend downward from the corners of a patient’s mouth, or marionette lines, are treatable with dermal fillers.
- Corners of the mouth
- Lips: Patients over 21 can volumize both their upper and lower lip with certain dermal fillers.
- Area between the eyebrows
- Areas suffering from acne or burn scars
- With certain fillers, patients can restore lost volume to the backs of their hands.
Types of Dermal Fillers
Many dermal fillers achieve their remarkable, natural results by injecting a serum of hyaluronic acid in the deep and mid-level tissues in a patient’s face. Hyaluronic acid itself has a tendency to attract and retain moisture. In fact, hyaluronic acid is a polymer naturally occurring in our own bodies; youthful skin is firm and smooth thanks to the hyaluronic acid in our systems keeping our collagen and elastins healthy and happy. Unfortunately, as we age, our body produces less of this moisture-supporting component. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers re-introduce this beneficial substance back into the places where our skin has drooped, depressed, or wrinkled. The skin responds positively to the injection, and the results look natural, because your body is accepting something it is already accustomed to benefiting from in its system.
Patients who are interested in the benefits of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers should ask Dr. Murphy more about:
The dermal filler Restylane injects NASHA, or Non Animal-Derived Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid, into areas of the face where wrinkles or depressions have formed.
It is a safe, effective means of re-introducing the volumizing benefit of hyaluronic acid back into our facial tissue. The results can be seen immediately; a Restylane injection will restore fullness and improves the healthy glow of the skin. Compared to other hyaluronic acid fillers, Restylane is known for holding more exactly to the surgeon’s intended contour. Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne are designed specifically to smooth deep wrinkles around a patient’s mouth, without interrupting the natural motion of their smile. Restylane Lyft improves volume in a patient’s cheeks, as well as smoothes out nasolabial folds.
While the results of a Restylane injection are non-permanent, the patient will enjoy natural but improved skin texture and volume for six to nine months.
A Restylane injection can also restore volume to concavities that have formed on a patient’s face, or fill in the sunken area below the eyes. Pleased patients are advised to ask Dr. Murphy about creating a Restylane treatment plan over an eighteen-month period if they want to optimize their long-term results.
Juvéderm’s hyaluronic-acid-based injection is known for delivering long-lasting results.
Juvéderm Voluma XC is a filler specifically designed to improve the volume in a patients’ cheeks; results on average last up to two years. Juvéderm XC has the ability to smooth severe wrinkles and nasolabial folds for up to one year, while Juvéderm Vollure XC softens severe lines and wrinkles for up to eighteen months. Juvéderm also offers a variety of injections designed for long-lasting augmentation of the upper and lower lip. A Juvéderm injection is usually less likely to leave bumps or upset the texture of the treated area.

Belotero injects a hyaluronic acid gel solution into wrinkles to diminish the appearance of both laugh and marionette lines. Due to its Cohesive Polydensified Matrix, or CPM, process, it not only reduces the wrinkles on a patient’s face for up to six months, the solution also improves the natural skin itself, underneath the treated areas.
Versa is another excellent dermal injection treatment.
Revanessa Versa monitors and processes each small batch of their gel through highly-controlled net-milling technology, which ensures that the spherical particles of their hyaluronic injection integrate as naturally as possible into the patient’s facial tissue. Versa delivers the desired smoothing and volumizing of wrinkles and nasolabial folds, and has the added benefit of less post-injection swelling for the patient than most dermal fillers.
Calcium hydroxylapatite is a form of calcium that we as humans already carry in our teeth and bones. A dermal filler containing calcium hydroxylapatite particles will fill in the wrinkles in a patient’s face or hands, for natural-looking results. The improvements can last as long as 18 months.
Calcium hydroxylapatite can be visible under x-ray while in the body, and thus obscure the images desired in the test.
Radiesse injects a gel serum of Calcium Hydroxylapatite in order to restore volume and diminish wrinkles in the patient’s face or hands. Patients also have the option of Radiesse (+), a version of the serum containing lidocaine, which creates a safe, pain-free experience for the patient. The Radiesse gel is also designed to kick-start your body’s natural production of collagen. A patient sees long-lasting, natural improvement to the signs of aging on their face. The results can last a year or more in patients.
We owe the firmness and elasticity in our skin to the collagen maintaining its structure, alongside the elastins and hyaluronic acid keeping our skin strong, tight, and healthy. Collagen itself is a protein found in bone, cartilage, tendons, and skin in animals and humans. A dermal filler with collagen restores the collagen that naturally breaks down in our bodies with age.
Collagen can be injected in various areas of the face to fill in scars, lines, and wrinkles, and augment the lips, for natural-looking results.
Zyderm & Zyplast
Zyderm I, Zyderm II, and Zyplast inject a bovine dermal collagen into the dermis of a patient’s skin in order to restore the lost appearance of smoothness and volume, while also giving your body opportunity to accept the new collagen internally and thus restore its underlying structure. Zyderm I is designed to treat fine lines, scars, and wrinkles, as well as thin-skinned areas of the face. Zyderm II is capable of smoothing moderate folds and scars; Zyplast, designed to fill in pronounced scars, lines, and wrinkles, contains an injection of collagen and glutaraldehyde, which works to strengthen the collagen fibers themselves.
The body usually accepts the bovine collagen as its own. To avoid a chance of allergic reaction, Dr. Murphy will perform a skin test, usually on the arm, to assure the safety of the procedure.
The results of a treatment with Zyderm I or II can last three to six months with. Zyplast’s results can last as long as a year.
An autologen collagen dermal filler holds the added benefit of injecting a patient with their own collagen, increasing the chances of the body’s accepting the collagen, and achieving natural, youthful results. A patient’s collagen is usually collected during a previous procedure, during which there was an opportunity to collect discarded or excess tissue. Your collagen is processed and capable of standing up to five years, ready for use.
The results last on average nine months. While this procedure has a reduced risk of infection, due to the fact the collagen used is your own, it tends to cost more than the bovine collagen dermal fillers. The recovery may also take longer than the average recovery after a dermal filler.
Bellafill is a collagen gel which diminishes the appearance of smile lines.
Bellafill is designed to leave a build-up of “microspheres” to which your own natural collagen can attach and improve. Patients see an increase in skin’s volume, as well as a reduction in wrinkles. The results can last for anywhere from five to eight to even ten years.
Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible man-made polymer, often used in absorbable stitches and bone screws. To see the best results of PLLA as a dermal filler, doctors recommend multiple installments over a period of months, to achieve effects capable of lasting up to 2 years.
Sculptra Aesthetic injects Poly-L-Lactic acid into the deep dermis in order to diminish facial creases and wrinkles. Sculptra Aesthetic’s Poly-L-Lactic acid serum revitalizes collagen production, to help the skin naturally restore its own volume and structure. Results can last up to two years.
Candidates for Dermal Fillers:

- Are in overall good health.
- Are not pregnant.
- Are non-smokers.
- Do not have an allergy to lidocaine (not present in all dermal fillers.

Most dermal filler sessions can be completed in as little as 15 minutes, or at most an hour, depending on the injection material chosen and the desired outcomes identified by Dr. Murphy and his patient.
Minor pain is possible during a dermal filler injection, but many patients report it is tolerable. Patients can receive a topical or local anesthetic to make their experience more comfortable. After receiving their dermal filler, Dr. Murphy’s patients will briefly be monitored and assessed to guarantee they have the healthiest, most ideal outcome and recovery.
Recovery time varies based on the patient and the dermal filler they have received. Dr. Murphy and his team will help each patient form and feel comfortable with their ideal recovery plan, as well as their expected timeline of recovery.
Swelling and bruising may occur after a dermal filler injection. Temporary numbing or redness of the injected areas is also possible; ice pack treatments can help diminish any swelling or discomfort.
Patients are advised to avoid intense physical activity for one to two days after their injections, while they will be able to return to work on the day of their procedure, if they choose.
Patients will follow-up with Dr. Murphy to discuss healing, results, and the patient’s future skin health.
Dermal fillers are a natural, effective way to fill in wrinkles, lines, scars, and depressions, while improving the overall health and volume of a patient’s skin. Results may vary for each patient, depending on the patient’s body and the type of dermal filler received.
Patients who receive dermal fillers generally enjoy the disappearance of wrinkles and lines around their mouth and forehead, report increased volume in their cheeks, lips, or skin itself, and see an improvement in their depressions and scars. Similarly, if patients received dermal fillers in their hands, they see restored volume and youthfulness in the backs of their hands.
Results are usually visible immediately, but patients will see their best results once swelling subsides. Dr. Murphy will follow-up with you periodically after your treatment, to discuss with you ways of seeing your longest-lasting results possible.
Not all patients may be able to achieve their desired improvements with dermal fillers; Dr. Murphy may advise they will achieve their best results through a surgical procedure, like a facelift.
