Facelift

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Friendswood, Pearland and Houston

With each passing year, gravity, the sun, genetics, smoking, and other environmental factors all take their toll on our skin. Our aging skin develops more fine lines and wrinkles and our faces slowly lose youthful volume. Skin laxity diminishes, contributing to the appearance of jowls and a heavy, sagging jawline. Unfortunately, many cosmetic procedures do not adequately address this degree of facial aging.

A Facelift is a surgical procedure that corrects facial wrinkles and sagging, drooping skin by tightening the skin and underlying facial muscles. Facelifts are performed with small, easily concealed scars: a facelift is a long-lasting, undetectable way to address loose and wrinkled skin. Patients enjoy a more youthful, healthy facial appearance, for years to come!

What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that removes loose, excess skin on the face and repositions tissue and muscles to create a smoother, more defined visage. There are different facelift techniques that address different concerns and areas of the face. Dr. Murphy is happy to discuss the different options during a consultation.

Benefits of a Facelift

Do your wrinkles and loose skin make you look tired, sad, or aged? A facelift is an excellent way to:

  • Restore a more alert, youthful expression
  • Smooth wrinkles and fine lines that may have formed around your eyes and mouth
  • Tighten sagging skin, including the jowls.
  • Improve the appearance of your neck and jawline.
  • Restore the facial muscles to their tighter, more youthful position.
  • Achieve balance and attractive facial contour
  • Match the youthful energy you feel on the inside with your physical appearance.
  • Achieve results that last for years! Most facelifts last as long as fifteen years.

Facelifts are easily combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures to achieve patients’ ideal, beautiful results.

Candidates

Good candidates for a facelift are men and women who are experiencing moderate to severe signs of aging in their face. These can include the development of lines and wrinkles, as well as noticeable loss of skin laxity. Patients may wish to address their jowls, a sagging neckline, or a drooping facial expression overall.

To see best results, candidates should maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Candidates should be non-smokers who are at a stable weight. If you have a pre-existing medical condition which could interfere with your body’s ability to heal following your facelift, discuss your condition with Dr. Murphy to determine your best facial rejuvenation option.

A good window for our patients to receive a facelift is before the age of 70, when skin laxity is still somewhat healthy. No two cases are the same: some patients may even be good candidates as early as their late thirties.

Some candidates may not need to turn to surgical facial rejuvenation yet, and can achieve their results with an artful treatment of dermal fillers at Pearwood Plastic Surgery instead. Board-certified surgeon Dr. Kevin Murphy will help you determine if you are a good candidate for a facelift during your private consultation.

Consultation

Dr. Murphy works with every patient to create the treatment plan that’s right for their personal goals and aesthetic needs of their face. After Dr. Murphy examines your face, he will discuss your goals for your appearance and make recommendations of what facelift techniques will achieve your goals. If he believes you might be a better candidate for an alternative rejuvenating procedure, he will share his professional opinion. Patients will also be asked to discuss their medical history, medication use, and overall lifestyle habits. This will guarantee Dr. Murphy recommends a treatment option that will be best and safest for you.

We invite you to ask any questions you may have about facelifts or any other facial rejuvenation procedures that you are interested in at this time. Dr. Murphy wants every patient to be as well-informed as possible so that they feel confident in their chosen treatment plan.

Facelift Techniques

Standard Facelift

A standard facelift will correct aged, sagging facial skin and the stretched or loose facial musculature underneath. This procedure is also known as an SMAS lift, which refers to our “Superficial Muscular Aponeurtoic System.” To perform a standard, or SMAS, lift, Dr. Murphy makes an incision at the temple and along the hairline. In most cases, the incision will continue until it is concealed behind the ears. The incision technique you receive will depend on the procedure details you and Dr. Murphy agree upon during your consultation.

This procedure will effectively erase jowls and smile lines.

During a SMAS facelift, Dr. Murphy repairs and tightens the facial muscles. This will restore support to patient’s skin and facial structure for years to come. He will next tighten your skin to smooth wrinkles and correct the tired appearance created by lost facial volume. Thanks to Dr. Murphy’s years of experience, patient’s tightened skin will look natural, not stretched or “done.” Once the skin has been repositioned into a more tight, youthful contour, the excess skin will be removed. The incisions will be closed. Your facial appearance will still look natural, but ten years younger!

Mid Facelift

A mid facelift requires a small incision in the hairline to perform. Dr. Murphy performs mid facelifts to tighten and remove loose skin from patients’ midfacial region. This procedure can restore lift and volume to the upper cheeks, as well as rejuvenate the appearance of the undereyes. Many patients decide to combine their mid facelift with a brow lift to achieve ideal youthful results in their upper face.

Mini Facelift

Mini facelifts are popular, minimally-invasive procedures that are designed to address lax skin and muscles in the lower third of the face.

Patients can receive two forms of mini facelift:

S-Lift

This procedure is performed by making small incisions at the temple, in front of the ears.

An S-Lift will tighten and lift the skin around the jaw. Patient’s lower facial muscles will also be tightened. Once the lower third of the face has been tightened, any excess skin is removed. This is a good option for patients who may be younger and only experiencing minor skin laxity in their lower face. Patients who are experiencing jowls or a noticeable degree of skin sagging in their neck may be better candidates for an alternative facelift technique.

Any scarring is easily concealed in the hairline or natural folds in the skin.

MACS Lift

This short-scar facelift is performed through incisions in front of the ear, in the hairline. Dr. Murphy detaches the facial muscles from the cheek, enabling him to tighten them. The skin is tightened to create a natural, youthful appearance of the jawline and lower face.

If patients qualify, Dr. Murphy can remove excess tissue in the neck at this time through a miniscule hole. Excess skin is removed and the small incisions are closed.

Facelift at Pearwood Plastic Surgery

Every patient at Pearwood Plastic Surgery receives the highest quality care, with results to match. Dr. Murphy performs every facelift with the patient’s unique anatomy in mind. His procedures are safe, cutting edge, and artful.

Your facelift can be performed with either local anesthetic or general anesthesia, depending on the details of your facelift procedure.

Whether you receive a standard, mid, or mini facelift, care is taken to make incisions in easily-concealed locations in the hairline. Your facelift will remove your excess skin, strengthen your facial muscles, and tighten the targeted area of your face for a more youthful, invigorated expression.

Many patients decide to combine complementary facial rejuvenation procedures to revive the appearance of their entire face. Common procedures that patients combine with their facelift include a brow lift, neck lift, and blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift.

Dr. Murphy’s results will be noticeable but natural. As you heal, your facelift will be undetectable: you will simply look like a healthy, rejuvenated you!

Recovery

Due to the residual effects of the anesthesia, patients will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive them home after their facelift procedure.

Every patient will receive recovery instructions that reflect the details of their individualized treatment, including care for your bandages and sutures. Following your procedure, swelling and bruising are not uncommon. Dr. Murphy will discuss approved methods of reducing these symptoms, and what medications will be best for alleviating any discomfort.

Patients often need one to two weeks off work following their facelift. Strenuous Physical Activity should be avoided for at least two weeks. Most of the swelling and bruising following your facelift will be healed within the first two weeks, and continue to resolve over the following six to eight weeks.

Recovery time from mid and mini facelifts tends to be shorter than that from an SMAS facelift. Most swelling or bruising will be healed within the first week and be resolved within the next few weeks. Incisions from these procedures will heal within four to six weeks.

During your recovery period, refrain from smoking, drinking, or swimming. These activities can inhibit your healthy healing.

Results

As your post-procedure swelling and bruising diminish, you will begin to see the results of your facelift. Your skin will sit in a smoother, tighter, more youthful position. The appearance of your facial wrinkles will be greatly reduced. Your jawline will look smoother and you will no longer have loose or sagging facial skin. The results of your facelift will continue to improve over the months following your procedure as your skin and muscles accept their new position. Your outcomes will continue to improve until a year after your facelift. Due to the fact that your procedure will also tighten your facial muscles, your results will last for as long as fifteen years.

Results after a mini lift will improve over the next few months. The lower third of your face will have a tight, youthful appearance. The results of a mini facelift can last as long as six years.

Cost

The price of a facelift procedure will depend on the details of your individualized treatment. During your consultation with Dr. Murphy, you will work together to create a treatment plan that is best for your unique goals and appearance. You will receive a cost breakdown that reflects this custom treatment plan.
